BRIGHTON LOCK HORNS

Brighton & Hove Albion is going to lock horns with Barnsley in a Championship game tomorrow at their home ground Amex.

The Seagulls will be entering that game as favourites as their opposition is very low in confidence at the moment.

Barnsley is currently right at the bottom of the Championship points table and they will be making their way to Amex without their manager David Flitcroft who has recently faced the axe. It’s the assistant manager, Micky Mellon, who will manage the Tykes against Brighton.

However, the good news for the Barnsley fans is that a couple of their main players (David Fox and Chris O’Grady) who couldn’t feature in the last game against Birmingham because of their respective injuries has got fit now and they can be expected to turn up on the ground at some point of time in the match against the Seagulls.

As far as Brighton is concerned, they are at no. 9 in the Championship points table at the moment. They have not lost a Championship game in the last couple of months. The last time that they had suffered a defeat was against Nottingham Forest in the first week of October. It suggests that their recent form has been pretty good.

The Seagulls’ boss, Oscar Garcia, might give the Scottish midfielder Liam Bridcutt a starting opportunity as he had impressed during his substitute outing in the previous game against AFC Bournemouth. Will Buckley might also find himself in the starting line up.

The last time that these two sides had taken on each other was in March this year. The Tykes had ended up winning that game convincingly. It was Chris Dagnall and Jason Scotland who had found the back of the net for them.

It seems the Germans are destined for success both in Domestic football (with Bayern and Dortmund making the Champions League Final), and international football - with the men making the semis and being generally the most impressive team at the tournament last time around, and the women taking their six successive European title!

Grobbelaar backs technical committee

It would be fair to say that there have been plenty of opinions following Liverpool's dreadful transfer window, prompting speculation that the Reds are set to establish a "technical committee" to aid Brendan Rodgers in his hunt for new players. Former goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar thinks this is a good concept and says that the club could benefit through adopting such an approach.

Having offloaded Andy Carroll in a shock £1m loan move to West Ham in the last few days of the transfer window, the general consensus was that Rodgers would bring in a suitable replacement. However, as the seconds ticked down it was becoming more and more obvious that the £35m man was not going to be replaced and this caused something of a stir amongst supporters. It means the Reds are severely limited in attacking options - which is incredibly concerning considering the disastrous start to the new campaign.

Following such a lack of activity, several newspapers have reported that the club are about to establish a technical committee to advise the manager on new players. This comes despite the fact that Rodgers specifically said that he does not want to answer to a Director of Football.

While such a committee is certainly a debatable topic amongst most people, former keeper Grobbelaar is quite positive about the whole set up.

The 54-year-old, who made over 440 appearances for Liverpool between 1981 and 1994, told talkSPORT, "What I’m reading now is that they’re going to have to go through a committee but if you have a look at the turn of events of football and the new phase we have a soccer expert who has a look at all these players and then you have to go to him. You have to debate him before you actually get the player to your club. It is a little bit of bother but in the long run maybe it is a good thing for all clubs."

Can Manchester United remain competitive?

The club that has dominated the Premier League since its existence had their credentials to remain competitive come into question of late.

Last season Manchester United lost the league to their local rivals, Manchester City, on goal difference on the final day of the season. It was a wound that cut deep. For the first time in 44 years it was the blue side of Manchester that was celebrating a league victory.

Spain came into the European Championship Final knowing that if they won they would become the world's most succesful international team of the modern day era, with an impressive hatrick of the Euro 2008 title, a World Cup bagged in South Africa in 2010, and then this final title to complete the set.

Predictably Spain started strongly, but it was all in the balance until Manchester City's David Silva stepped up to the plate and nodded in this fine effort! Congratulations Spain!

Alonso double sees off France

It was clear when Vincente del Bosque chose to go with another striker-less formation that one of Spain’s star midfielders would have to step up to the plate and the Real Madrid man didn’t disappoint.

The game started slowly with Cesc Fabegras having a very hopeful penalty shout turned down on six minutes before Xabi Alonso tried to catch Lloris out with a long range effort.

It was Alonso however who opened the scoring on 19 minutes when Jordi Alba lost his marker and produced a perfect cross from the left wing. The former Liverpool midfielder duly arrived unmarked and his downward header across goal gave Lloris no chance.

CELTIC NET CLEAN SWEEP

Celtic trio of manager Neil Lennon, defender Charlie Mulgrew and winger James Forrest managed to pick up the Clydesdale Bank Premier League end of season awards in a clean sweep.

Celtic have by far been the best team in the Scottish Premier league, although many would say that it is partly down to the financial difficulties faced by Rangers. However, there can be no denying that the Celtic trio of Neil Lennon, Charlie Mulgrew, and James Forrest do not deserve a chance to win the end of the season awards. Celtic have recently claimed the title from Rangers and are currently 20 points ahead of them in the table.

You wouldn't be too happy if your goalkeeper made this error - though thankfully it onlt happened on the kids football pitch!

The goalie has the ball in her hands and is getting ready to clear the ball up-field. There is no danger from any of the strikers, and she has plenty of time and space, which makes how she scores an own goal even more bizarre!

Picture the scene - there are just minutes to go in the game, and your team are in desperate need of a goal.

After a naughty kick-out by the opposition the commentators start talking up your free-kick specialist, saying that its about the right distance from the goal for him to get it up and down, and its on the right side of the pitch for him to really swing it into the corner like he did a few games ago.

The crowd waits with baited breath, and then... this...! lol
